Google Gmail Contextual Gadget SmartsheetWe start and end the day in email. The new Smartsheet Contextual Email Gadget in Google Apps makes it possible to manage more of your business operations in Smartsheet right from within email.

Whether you are managing a single project or many (sales pipelines, inventory, marketing events, product enhancement priorities, etc...), keeping track of all the deadlines and changes made by others is handled automatically by Smartsheet. It notifies you of the relevant details via email, and Gmail now makes those email notifications an editable window into Smartsheet.

Whatever the form and layout of the work you are tracking, the contextual gadget in Gmail makes viewing and editing it seamless.

Example: The status changes on a phase of your project. Smartsheet notifies you via email according to the rules you’ve set up. Embedded in the email is a form that provides the ability to access and edit any of the information, files and discussion threads associated with that project phase - without leaving the email.

While some tout the virtues of relying less on email, that's a battle many have lost - multiple times. We live in our inboxes, so why not make business apps work inside them? Emails contain the content and instructions for people to make updates in business apps, therefore, we should enable them to drive business apps from inside email.  See Smartsheet and other application examples in Google's Enterprise Blog post:

Go-Go (Gmail contextual) Gadgets - get more done right from your inbox

Turning on the Gadget

Mike and Tracy, the email gadget is available when you "install" Smartsheet in your Google Apps domain. Whomever is the domain administrator for your Google Apps account can do this. If you are a Gmail user (which is different than running your company's Mail and Calendar on Google Apps), then this feature does not show up for you. Shoot us a message at support@smartsheet.com if you'd like better help than this comment.

More Email Integration

+1 on Teddy's comments above. This post from Smartsheet is 100% right when it says that the battle to move people out of their email inbox has been lost. I find it strange that Smartsheet, which is so good at so many things, acknowledges this but is still so lacking compared to their competitors on email integration (especially for discussion posts). This Gmail gadget is a small step in the right direction, but we'd love you more, Smartsheet, if you played more nicely with email.

what about Exchange and Outlook?

Would love to link SmartSheet with our Exchange/Outlook users since we don't use Gmail.
Please consider it.
Love SmartSheet!

Half way there...

This is great but what I really need is the ability to CREATE new tasks directly from my emails and have it include the body of the email or a link to it in the task. One of your competitors that has lots of "moons" does this in a great way but the rest of their app sucks in comparison to Smartsheet. Please copy them or provide similar functionality!

Creating tasks from emails

Yes, I agree with "Teddy" from Sept. 29. The ability to create a task by sending an email is the next thing we need to really integrate this into the different roles we have. We use this type of feature for adding content into Batchbooks and it is really useful.

Also to be able to forward an email with attachments into a Row would be HUGE TOO> Can we have this tomorrow. I would be willing to pay an extra $1.26 a month for both those features!

Adding Smartsheet to your Google Apps domain

Tracy,
The email gadget should automatically appear in Smartsheet alerts and update requests if the Smartsheet App is installed for your Google Domain.
Please confirm that see Smartsheet installed in your Google Apps dashboard, accessible via this link (using your domain)

how do you turn on this gadget?

I can't figure out how to access this gadget. My alerts and updates aren't including anything new that will allow me to make changes in the email. Is there something I need to turn on in my Google Apps account? I have already attached Smartsheet to my account.
