A better way to send files

Search Google for 'Send Files'. Surprised by the number of companies offering services focused solely on sending files?

Here were a few names I jotted down: sendthisfile, sendspace, yousendit, megaupload, transferbigfiles...you'd think that people would run out of creative company names. I guess not.

Like so many markets, many entrants have jumped into this space, each convinced that their mousetrap is better, easier, or more cost effective than the next.

Not familiar with File Transfer market?

Here's the basic idea: E-mailing large files to others doesn't work well due to file attachment size restrictions imposed by e-mail systems

The solution: Upload files to a secure location on the web and e-mail someone a link to download the file instead.

With the rapid growth of digital content, these services have become quite popular. A few of the established players tout millions of registered users.

So is Smartsheet adding itself to the long list of 'Send File' providers?

Yes. Free and paid Smartsheet user accounts now have the ability to securely upload and e-mail file download links.

But... It's different. Here are three reasons why:

  1. Smartsheet enables you to track your work and tasks in the same solution in which you store and send your files - that's convenient and saves you time.
  2. Upload your files only once. Smartsheet's default behavior is not to delete your file after 14 days. You can keep them around forever.
  3. There is no limit to the number of files you may upload or have downloaded

So, give it a shot by following these steps:

  • Create a sheet
  • Attach a file to a row or to your sheet's Attachments tab
  • Click 'Send Link' beneath the attachment for which you'd like to send a download link (or rt-click on a row and select 'Send Row' to send links for all attachments associated with a row)

Have ideas on what else you'd like to see in the feature? Let us know.

attach a file to a form

I've created an issue tracking sheet and also a form that will allow users to add issues. I'd also like them to be able to attach a screen shot using the online form. Can you help?

Attaching files via Smart Forms

We agree with your suggestion. This is a natural to incorporate into an update to the recently released Smart Forms feature.
