Every six to ten weeks we release updates to the Smartsheet service. Some releases contain large new feature categories, such as Gantt charts for online project management, while others are aimed at making Smartsheet's existing features better.
This week's release was especially satisfying because we delivered the #1 customer requested enhancement - the ability to filter on columns. In addition to the expected capability of selecting from a list of values that exist in a column, it is also possible to filter on text strings, date ranges, and numeric values. Whether you are managing a project, tracking a sales pipeline, or building a dataset through crowdsourcing, Smartsheet filters enable you to more rapidly find information. To apply filters on one or more columns, rt-click on a column's header.
In addition to filter, the following are also now available:
- Insert Link - from a cell's rt-click menu, link to another smartsheet or any URL and provide display text. (remember: if you don't need display text, you can always type URLs directly into a cell)
- Smartsheet iGoogle gadget - On the heels of our Google Apps Marketplace launch, this gadget makes it easy to launch your open and recently updated sheets from your Google homepage.
- Download URL provided for file attachments. Many customers send rows or individual files from Smartsheet using rt-click Send Row or Send Link found under any attachment. The download link can be found on the form that is shown after clicking Send Link.
- Upload files to Smartsheet via Drag and Drop in Firefox v3.6 - Rather than having to click 'Attach File', browse to your file(s), and click upload, Firefox v3.6 users can now simply drag files from their desktop onto a row in Smartsheet. Very handy.
- More options for customization your color and logo - the .png file type is now supported.
- Additional Gantt print options - you can now choose which grid columns (if any) you wish to show when you print a sheet that includes a Gantt.
- Edit Row form - you can now launch a vertically oriented row edit form from the row option menu (rt-click on a row number to see menu). Useful when entering data for a row that has many columns.
- Expanded support or importing Excel files - now you can create a new sheet from .xls and .xlsx (Excel 2007 and higher) files.
- Reminders for AFTER a given date - previously the reminder option menu only showed 'Remind my X days BEFORE' a given date.
As always, continue to send in those great ideas via the 'Feedback' link in the application. Even if you believe someone else has already made the request - send us a note anyway. Number of votes play a role in determining priority.
