"Will I be sent a DVD, or cd backup of the program when purchased?" It was a simple question posed by a trial Smartsheet customer last week that provided another piece of evidence that SaaS for collaboration and online project management has crossed the chasm. While millions of people have tried and subscribed to online applications, tens of millions have not. This larger group consists of those who are perfectly content letting others blaze the early technology trail and continue to stick with what's worked for them for the previous decade. However, with every mainstream proof point that Google announces or online application marketing message that is sent, the market majority is coming online. source: Industry News So, for those of you who are considering using an online app for the first time, here are a few pointers that may help clarify how Smartsheet works:
Whether you are an early adopter who has been running Google Apps for years or are about to make your first leap into the online application space, we look forward to helping you manage your projects and other collaborative work online. -Mark Links: |

Backup
I understand I don't need to install anything to tun an online app like Smartsheet. I've noted that I can make unlimited local backups. The question is, should (heaven forbid) the online app not be available forever, is the local backup of any use without the application? That is, are all of the basic data and documents accessible from the local backup without the online app?
When considering an online app for important data, this is the big question for me. How can I recover, if something happens to you?
Thanks
Smartsheet Backups - Local Access
Bill - the backups are zip files containing two things:
1 - Excel workbooks containing exported snapshots of your Smartsheet (and row discussions if you use that feature)
2 - Files that you may have attached to your smartsheets at the row or sheet level.
The Smartsheet service is not required to open these backup files...and for that matter even if you don't have Excel. One could easily view the backed up data by importing them into a Google Doc or other free service that provides an import Excel function.
