A short elevator ride was just the beginning of Mark Frederick’s Smartsheet journey. After chatting about the multiple growth opportunities, passion for customers, and authenticity — one of the values at Smartsheet — with recruiter Heidi Urbauer, he was sold (talk about a great elevator pitch!).
Mark is now a client development manager in our Bellevue office where he helps customers increase effectiveness and achieve more by serving as a subject matter expert for Smartsheet solutions. In this role, he’s able to recommend Smartsheet products and services that will help customers solve business problems, like eliminating silos and improving collaboration and engagement.
I caught up with Mark to learn more about his experience working at Smartsheet, how he’s empowering our customers, and what advice he has for people interested in joining our growing team.
What does a typical day look like?
I’m a client development manager, so my day is spent with customers, in demos, and closing deals.
I believe in what we do, and I use my enthusiasm and Smartsheet solutions to help unravel customer challenges. It’s a lot of fun!
What is your favorite part of your job?
I get to work with great people. Culture comes from people and company values in action and I see that at Smartsheet.
What is your favorite Smartsheet value and how you see it put into action?
Authentic. I see it in my engagements with colleagues and our leadership. And I use it in my engagements with customers.
How have you been able to learn and grow at Smartsheet?
Smartsheet has many use cases and each customer has a unique work landscape, so each engagement is unique. This has sharpened my skills and resilience and I’m thankful for it.
How do you use Smartsheet in your daily work?
My favorite features are the sharing tools within sheets that enable me to get granular and demonstrate how easy it is to do so much with a simple sheet. Dashboards are a powerful way for me to share a lot of information with customers, too. I use them as a resource for ongoing conversations, including data sheets and even video.
What are your hobbies outside of work?
I practice kendo, a traditional Japanese martial art. It’s hard work (especially in the summer when your equipment makes it feel like you’re in a sauna), but the physical and mental benefits make it completely worth it.
What’s the one piece of advice you have for someone looking to join Smartsheet?
No matter your level of experience or role, come prepared to learn and grow.
Who is someone you admire at Smartsheet and why?
There are quite a few! But Matt Mitchem, director of commercial sales, stands out to me. He’s a capable and engaging leader who is generous with his time despite being very busy. He understands the sales process from both the rep perspective as well as the customer experience, and supports our efforts with that insight. He leads from the front.
