Our Biggest Year Yet

2018 was a significant year for Smartsheet and for you, our customers. From our April IPO on the New York Stock Exchange, to announcing dozens of product enhancements at the sold-out ENGAGE Conference in October; from announcing our acquisition of Converse.AI in January, to opening our new London office in December, the past year was marked by meaningful product innovation, an increase in business momentum, and recognition of Smartsheet as a leader in the enterprise collaborative work management market.

Going Public

In April, Smartsheet listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol “SMAR.” While the IPO was, no doubt, a significant moment in the history of the company, ultimately it represents just one of many milestones along the journey. It was an energizing moment for the entire team and one that established a new level of accountability.

Going public provides us with the resources and the platform to take giant steps forward in order to better serve you, our customers. It provides additional capital, enabling us to accelerate product development and geographic expansion. At the same time, becoming a public company brings increased scrutiny and requires us to be even more disciplined in everything we do. We welcome this focus and believe that through greater rigor a better company is realized.

New Product Capabilities Introduced in 2018 Solve Business-Critical Problems

Throughout the year, we added many new capabilities and solutions to empower you and your teams to move your ideas to impact, fast. We announced more than 20 product enhancements and offerings at ENGAGE’18 alone, that enable you to:

  • Save time spent on repetitive processes with the new intuitive workflow builder, which empowers everyone on your team to automate workflows, including automated alerts, update requests, and approval requests.
  • Better control stakeholder access to information with Smartsheet Dynamic View, which helps you to maintain confidentiality by enabling multiple users or vendors to collaborate without accessing the full sheet.
  • Unite platforms and centralize information with the Smartsheet Data Uploader, which imports data from critical enterprise systems into Smartsheet. (Note: We launched Data Shuttle in May 2021, which replaces Data Uploader and now allows you to upload or offload your data between Smartsheet and your ERPs, CRMs, and databases.)
  • Confidently deploy large-scale initiatives at unprecedented speed with Smartsheet Accelerators, packaged solutions based on customer insights and best practices that provide near-instant business value, enterprise-grade security, real-time program visibility, and high user engagement.

In January 2018, we announced our acquisition of Converse.AI. Over the course of the year we released integrations that use Converse.AI Chatflow technology, including our Workplace by Facebook, Google’s Hangouts Chat, and Slack messaging integrations, so you and your teams can receive the information you need to get work done within your preferred messaging app.

In September, Smartsheet was selected by the federal government’s Joint Authorization Board to participate in their accelerated certification program, FedRAMP Connect. We began the process of preparing our platform for the FedRAMP marketplace, and look forward to meeting the needs of federal employees as they look to capitalize on what Smartsheet provides.

Connecting With and Learning From You

At ENGAGE’18, our second-annual global customer conference, we more than doubled attendance from the previous year to nearly 2,500. It was inspiring to meet many of you from companies of every type and size, hear your stories and enthusiasm for the product, and learn how Smartsheet is being used to tap the potential of your teams and businesses.

To open still more direct lines of communication, we launched our Product Advisory Council (PAC). Through our conversations with this group, we continue to learn more about what you, our customers, need from us, and how we can improve our product offerings to better serve you. We also expanded our Smartsheet User Groups across multiple cities, including our first international user group in London, facilitating further conversations with and between many of you.

Smartsheet Named a Leader and Market Disruptor by Leading Analysts

Analysts and the broader market continue to recognize that our market category, Collaborative Work Management (CWM), represents technologies that are now essential for digital businesses to compete — and indeed survive  — in today’s marketplace.

In late October, Forrester Research published The Forrester Wave™: Collaborative Work Management Tools For The Enterprise, Q4 2018. According to that report, “Smartsheet leads the pack with a balance of features and future strategy.” In the same week, 451 Research named Smartsheet a recipient of their inaugural 451 Firestarter Award, honoring Smartsheet for technology innovation that “has the potential to be disruptive to the multi-billion-dollar traditional project management, productivity, and collaboration markets.”

We are honored to be recognized, and believe that being cited by leading analyst firms as both a leader and an innovative disruptor means we must be doing something right.

New Offices, Employees to Better Serve You

To support all of this innovation, our organization has grown to over 1,000 employees, including the expansion of our Boston office and new offices in Edinburgh and London. We opened our first international field office in the UK to bring direct, same-time-zone engagement to a greater number of you in the UK and EMEA.

Into 2019 — And Beyond

2018 was an amazing year. We are not treating it as the peak, however. I see it as a year in which we built a stronger foundation for the business and for you, our customers. The year past serves as a launchpad for Smartsheet as we continue to grow and innovate in ways that are valuable to you.
