Emilia Tautiva

When you ask someone about their job, the response can be very telling.

When I asked Emilia, a sales engineer at Smartsheet, she said, “I get to be the human bridge between what a customer does now and what’s possible in Smartsheet.”

Two years into her Smartsheet journey and four desk moves later in our growing Boston office, she continues to appreciate the human connection she’s able to foster with her team and customers.

I recently caught up with Emilia to learn more about her journey, the recent Terminator themed Sales Engineering Hackathon, and what gets her out of bed in the morning.

How would you describe your job in four words?

Intellectually stimulating, amazing team.

What does a typical day look like?

A typical day for me includes face-to-face meetings with reps, customer calls, and building Solutions for our customers.

What is your favorite part of your job?

I've worked at a few trendy SaaS organizations in the Boston area, but Smartsheet goes beyond trendy and encourages real human connections and excellence in all aspects. This extends beyond just work. I regularly go hiking with people from our Customer Success, Training, and Sales Engineering teams!

What is your favorite Smartsheet value and how do you see it put into action?

Supportive. I'm constantly learning from my coworkers, whether it's how to build a tricky new formula or how to position a product for a particular use case.

How have you been able to learn and grow at Smartsheet?

I’ve had the flexibility to move from a role on the Customer Success team to the Sales Engineering team. This has allowed me to build a broader knowledge base to effectively support customers both pre- and post-sale.

How do you use Smartsheet in your daily work?

I have a professional development dashboard that helps me keep track of my metrics, projects, and deliverables.

What’s the one piece of advice you have for someone looking to join Smartsheet?

Smartsheet is a super flexible tool, so get ready to work with customers from all different verticals and disciplines!

What is the biggest perk of Smartsheet’s Boston office?

It’s a super fun environment. We use a hype button when someone makes a good joke, and have a running list of our manager, John Hutchinson’s best advice, including "focus on the things you can control." We have such a fast-paced, growing company, but if everyone does their part the customer will have a good experience.

What is the All-Sales Engineering Hackathon? What was your favorite part of the event?

This Hackathon was a day where the commercial and strategic sales engineers at Smartsheet came together to create new demo environments — across construction, accounting, and governance to name a few — to help demonstrate the value and use cases for Smartsheet. My favorite part was working with international team members and strategic sales engineers to gain new perspectives and get supercharged brainpower in one room. Oh, and did I mention it was Terminator themed?

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

I get to sit next to and collaborate with some of the smartest people I know.
