Manager, Engineering (Remote Eligible in Bulgaria)

As we continue expanding into Bulgaria and build our operation, we are searching for a talented and motivated Engineering Manager. Our business is built on finding top-grade talent and empowering them to build and improve our service offerings.

You Will:

  • Lead, coach, and inspire a team of software engineers, fostering a culture of engineering excellence, continuous learning, and career development through regular feedback, mentoring, and growth-oriented conversations.
  • Oversee the end-to-end development and delivery of one or more products, setting clear goals and holding the team accountable for quality outcomes that serve our customers.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional partners across product management, UX, and customer teams, communicating technical direction clearly and building strong working relationships across the organisation.
  • Establish lean engineering processes that use rapid iteration, collaboration, and pragmatic prioritisation to ensure the team is solving the right problems in the right order.
  • Apply independent judgement to identify technical risks, resolve engineering blockers, and make sound architectural and process decisions under ambiguity.
  • Hire and grow engineering talent, promoting inclusive hiring practices and contributing to the long-term organisational health of the Bulgaria engineering hub.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of team processes, technical decisions, and project status, ensuring information is accessible and appropriately handled across stakeholders.
  • Manage day-to-day use of engineering tools, platforms, software systems, and cloud infrastructure to support the team's delivery work.
  • Operate with awareness of team resourcing and project scope in relation to engineering investment, escalating budget-relevant considerations to senior leadership as appropriate; this role carries no direct budget ownership.
  • Sustain high levels of concentration and cognitive engagement across concurrent workstreams, switching context between strategic planning, people management, and hands-on technical involvement as required.
  • Perform standard computer and keyboard use in a remote work environment.

You Have:

  • 8 or more years of software engineering experience, combined with 3 or more years of experience managing software engineering teams, demonstrating deep professional knowledge of the full software development lifecycle.
  • Deep software development skills in at least one systems development language such as Java, C++, or Python, with the ability to engage credibly in technical discussions and code reviews.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and delivering scalable, highly available customer-facing cloud applications using modern technology stacks.
  • Hands-on familiarity with technology areas such as distributed systems, systems automation, or cloud technologies, supported by genuine personal interest in continued learning within these domains.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a track record of identifying root causes, driving pragmatic solutions, and making well-reasoned decisions in complex or ambiguous engineering environments.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to clearly convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, facilitate productive team discussions, and represent engineering priorities across the organisation.
  • Proven ability to plan and manage multiple concurrent projects and workstreams, prioritising effectively and adapting to shifting requirements without losing sight of quality or delivery commitments.
  • Resilience and composure when navigating uncertainty, change, and the sustained pressures that come with leading engineering teams through growth and ambiguity.
  • Comfort working in a fully remote environment within a distributed international team, with the interpersonal awareness and self-discipline this requires.
  • Legal eligibility to work in Bulgaria on an ongoing basis.
  • Fluency in English is required. 

Smartsheet provides a competitive base salary range for roles that may be hired in different geographic areas we are licensed to operate our business from. Actual compensation is determined by several factors including, but not limited to, level of professional, educational experience, skills, and specific candidate location. In addition, this role will be eligible for a market competitive incentive opportunity.

BG Base Salary Pay Range
€70,250 - € 83,000 EUR
