Energy and Utility Companies Power Projects With Smartsheet

Bellevue, WA - September 13, 2011 - Leading online project management and collaboration software provider Smartsheet.com announced today that its intuitive spreadsheet-like SaaS tool has become an increasingly popular choice for energy and utility companies around the world. Hundreds of organizations focused on renewable energy, gas and oil exploration and production, power generation, energy retailing, reservoir projects and more energy-related services have adopted the tool to help manage projects.

Energy Central, the leading media company that provides information and research about important trends in the utility market, has also adopted Smartsheet to manage a variety of projects throughout the organization. Steven Solove, Chief Operating Officer of Energy Central, believes the momentum in the industry to use Smartsheet comes down to three aspects: simplicity, flexibility and structure.

“From the investor-owned utility companies to municipals, smaller co-ops and everything in between, they all have projects to manage. Smartsheet is an easy-to-use tool that helps them track progress, collaborate and share files with internal teams and outside contractors, and ultimately be accountable for delivering.”

Solove continued, “Our senior management team would get updates that our teams were working on various projects, but we didn’t have the structure to ensure they were brought to completion. Smartsheet gives us the structure and the visibility we need to make sure everything is on track and moving forward.”

Energy efficiency consulting firm HLN Energy Services assists individuals, businesses, and governments in assessing their energy use and making smart energy efficiency investments. “We helped make 250 houses more energy efficient last year for clients,” said Tracy Robinson, Owner, HLN Energy Services. “The tracking we have to do is overwhelming but Smartsheet keeps us focused.”

Beyond managing projects, HLN Energy Services uses Smartsheet to streamline communications with clients and increase sales. For example, the company uses the Smartform capability to collect information from clients interested in an energy audit of their home. They then use the information -- which is automatically populated into Smartsheet -- to deliver a report to the client describing the typical energy usage of their home and ways to maximize energy efficiency. “We scored a $50,000 contract because of Smartsheet,” added Robinson. “We were able to prove that we could stay on the same page by sharing our sheets to them. They were blown away.”

In addition, energy companies and utilities use Smartsheet to:

  • Manage short and long-term projects, including using Gantt chart view to quickly absorb a project’s progress
  • Securely share files and comments with external contractors
  • Appropriately assign manpower resources within a project
  • Monitor equipment and manage necessary maintenance
  • Set automated alerts and notifications when issues arise or deadlines approach
