Principal Technical Program Manager
For over 20 years, Smartsheet has empowered teams to manage work seamlessly and scale solutions smarter. Now, in our most ambitious chapter yet, we are uniting human teams with AI agents. By orchestrating the work agents do best, automating manual tasks and uncovering insights at scale, we create the space for people to focus on what truly matters: judgment, creativity, and big thinking. That is magic at work, and it’s what we show up for every day.
We're looking for a Principal Technical Program Manager to lead our most strategically critical, multi-year programs across the Product & Technology organization. This is the senior-most individual-contributor role on the TPM team: you'll own programs that span business units and company-wide initiatives, hold the global state of the portfolio, and turn ambiguous executive mandates into structured, delivered outcomes. You think in systems, lead like a program executive, and communicate with the clarity and conviction that shapes decisions at the board and executive level. You also set the bar for how the TPM function works — including how we put AI to work.
This role reports to the Director, Technical Program and Operations and can be based in our Bellevue, WA office or remotely from anywhere in the US where Smartsheet is a registered employer.
You Will:
- Drive the most strategically critical, multi-year programs spanning business units and company-wide initiatives — the work that shapes company strategy through execution
- Own global state for the Product & Technology org: hold a clear model of how every program connects to business outcomes and resource allocation, and when leadership shifts priorities, be the first to quantify total impact across teams, timelines, and outcomes — and recommend how to re-sequence to minimize risk
- Lead annual and multi-year strategic planning cycles; align roadmaps across orgs and product lines, and build the planning frameworks other programs adopt
- Set risk-management standards across the portfolio; anticipate systemic risk, navigate the most ambiguous high-stakes issues independently, and mentor others on org-wide risk landscapes
- Establish org-wide reporting standards that drive data-informed decisions at the executive level — connecting delivery metrics to business outcomes, not just program status
- Partner directly with VP, Director, and C-suite stakeholders across the company; influence without authority across org boundaries and shape organizational direction
- Proactively flag when investment and outcomes are misaligned, and make the trade-offs that protect long-term value
- Set the operational-excellence standards the org runs on define the metrics, cadences, and playbooks that scale our engineering org improving delivery predictability across Product & Technology
You Have:
- 10+ years of Technical Program Management experience, including a track record of driving company-wide programs with org-wide impact in complex, technical environments
- Demonstrated ability to independently define and manage the scope of ambiguous, cross-functional programs from a strategic mandate — not a handed-down spec
- Executive-ready communication: you frame complex trade-offs for VP, Director, and C-suite audiences, and shape the narrative around major initiatives without escalating everything
- A history of influencing across multiple engineering, product, and GTM orgs without formal authority
- Deep planning and risk fluency: multi-quarter and multi-year roadmapping, dependency and risk frameworks that other programs reuse, and sound judgment under pressure
- Builder mindset with real AI fluency — you design AI-first workflows, rapid-prototype solutions without waiting for top-down direction, and systematize before defaulting to manual process
- A record of developing others: mentoring TPMs, raising hiring standards, and contributing to how the function defines and grows the craft
- Experience in a high-growth technology company
- Business or technical degree, or equivalent experience
- Legally eligible to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis
