Smartsheet Sponsors Pip Hare as She Seeks to Break Record in the 2020-2021 Vendée Globe

BELLEVUE, Wash., September 3, 2020 -- Smartsheet (NYSE:SMAR), the enterprise platform for dynamic work, today announced its sponsorship of Pip Hare as a competitor in the 2020-2021 Vendée Globe as she aims to beat current female record-holder Dame Ellen MacArthur. A British professional sailor and one of six female skippers who is registered to race single-handed, non-stop around the world, Hare is the skipper of Medallia, a 60ft International Monohull Open Class Association (IMOCA) class boat which she will use to compete in the Vendée Globe starting in November.

Smartsheet is powering the Pip Hare Ocean Racing team through a dynamic work management platform that streamlines business and boat operations and optimizes live race management with reporting on weather, key boat performance data, and sailor’s vitals. This visibility and added agility into task management will provide their team with insights throughout a series of regattas to adjust and prepare before Hare takes on the challenge of the three-month competition. Smartsheet will also provide fans with a way to interact, receive expert commentary and track Hare’s progress throughout the Vendée Globe.

“Organizing a race around the globe is no small feat; it requires rigorous scheduling and time management for both Pip and our team across several locations and time zones but using a mix of spreadsheets and chat apps to keep everyone up-to-date resulted in longer hours and more work,” said Chris Adams, Commercial Manager for Pip Hare Ocean Racing. “Smartsheet’s solution gives our team the visibility and insights we need to take on this challenge while giving our fans a way to participate in Pip’s journey.”

“Pip’s team needed a powerful solution that not only levels the playing field amongst the larger sponsored teams, but provides an advantage by having a single source of truth that pulls crucial dynamic insights needed to win,” said Jon Harper, Senior Director, Consulting and Training at Smartsheet. “Inspired by her team's determination and dedication, we were proud to create a world-class Smartsheet solution that handles all the logistical planning and in-race insights before and throughout the Vendée Globe.”

The Vendée Globe is the only sailing race that goes around the world, solo, non-stop and without assistance. Occurring every four years with the eighth edition launching on November 8, 2020, in Les Sables d’Olonne, France, 35 skippers will attempt the 24,000-mile race around the globe over the course of three months ending back in Les Sables d’Olonne in January 2021.
