4 tips to demonstrate why you need a Smartsheet license

by Joe Worthey

If you’ve been working in Smartsheet without a license, or as part of a trial, you’ve been able to easily collaborate and add value. But when you’re ready to create your own solutions and drive programs, you’ll need to get your own license.

Your System Admin may have a license readily available for you, or like many organizations, they may need to be judicious about granting them as a limited resource. If that’s the case, or if you’ve recently been declined a license, it doesn’t mean you’ll never be able to snag one. You simply need to make your case.

To increase your odds of being granted a license when you request one, here are four tips:

  1. Learn how to use Smartsheet.
  2. Determine whether you need to create work.
  3. Log in to — and use — Smartsheet.
  4. Submit a strong license request.

1. Learn how to use Smartsheet.

Whether you’re just getting started or have used Smartsheet for a while, there are multiple resources to help you improve your proficiency.

Start with the one-hour recorded onboarding webinar, or browse the Learning Center for a guided self-paced format to gain more knowledge.

2. Determine whether you need to create work.

Licenses tend to be in limited supply. If you need to create solutions, be clear about your goals and how you’ll add value to your organization.

Think about a process that causes friction at work today. Outline each step of the process and highlight the things that make consistent work so challenging.

3. Log in to — and use — Smartsheet.

Logging in frequently, especially as an unlicensed user, shows System Admins your intent to be an active and contributing user. They’ll have confidence that if they grant you a license, it won’t go unused. Log in now.

4. Submit a strong license request.

Your System Admin may not know much about your role or why you need a license, so give them a reason to say yes.

If you don’t offer details for your license request — like why you need one, what you intend to create, and how you’ll add value — your request may not stand out. Learn how to submit a strong license request.
