Supporting empowerment in our local communities

by Katie Bouwkamp

“I have never been so proud to be a Smartsheet employee.”

Those are powerful words, and ones that I was delighted to hear shortly after Smartsheet donated a combined $100,000 to local nonprofits earlier this month.

As a company, our purpose is to empower everyone to improve how they work. Every day our team members come together to innovate, build, and deliver technology that helps customers push past what they thought was possible to get more done.

While our employees have a passion for improving how our customers work, they also have a shared desire to give back to our communities in a big way.

Hand with a heart image

Through our 2019 Corporate Giving initiative, we sought to support programs that have an empowerment component. Specifically, empowering children, families, and people in vulnerable situations. In that spirit, we asked our 1,100 employees to select the organizations they felt would most benefit from a monetary donation.

We wanted to share a little about the incredible organizations in Seattle, Boston, and Edinburgh that our employees selected as recipients:

Mary’s Place - Seattle

Mary's Place serves homeless women, children, and families in emergency situations, providing practical tools and resources that help women find housing and employment, including day and night shelters, hot meals, workshops, resources, and more.

Treehouse - Seattle

Each year, Treehouse helps 8,000 kids in foster care through programs that help them succeed in school, fulfill key material needs, and provide important childhood experiences that every child deserves.

YouthCare - Seattle

YouthCare works to end youth homelessness and to ensure that young people are valued for who they are and empowered to achieve their potential.

Cradles to Crayons - Boston

Cradles to Crayons provides children living in homeless or low-income situations, with the essential items they need to thrive — at home, at school, and at play — from birth through age 12.

Pine Street Inn - Boston

Pine Street Inn provides a full spectrum of services to help homeless men and women reach their highest level of independence and get back to a place they can call home.

Community One Stop Shop - Edinburgh

Community One Stop Shop is located in Broomhouse, Edinburgh, an area affected by poverty and deprivation. Their overall aim is to alleviate the effects of poverty and support people through crisis situations by providing advice, employability support, a food bank, and outreach.

Through the assistance of these organizations, and countless more in our local communities, thousands of people have the opportunity to become more self-sufficient and better equipped to maximize the quality of their lives.

Lastly, I’m proud to be part of Smartsheet Serves, a series of company-led volunteer events that will kick off this April. More to come on those efforts!
