What Is a Go-to-Market Strategy Template?

A go-to-market (GTM) strategy template is a planning tool teams use to outline their strategic plan to engage customers with a product, service, or other offering. Use a GTM template to define your target market and strategically position your product.

When Do You Need a Go-to-Market Strategy Document?

Create a GTM strategy document when you need a structure to define the campaign plan for your product or service. This ensures that you define your core capabilities, competitors, target market, goals, marketing strategy, channels, financial forecasts, and performance standards.

What Is Included in a Go-to-Market Strategy Template?

A GTM strategy template includes a detailed summary of your plan to launch your product or service. At the minimum, a GTM strategy template contains your business objectives, customers, target markets, and  channels, as well as your product’s unique offerings.

A GTM strategy template is crucial to design and document your plan for successfully bringing your product or service to market. Although they often vary, GTM templates typically include the following components:

  • Business Objectives: Sometimes called the provocation in a GTM template, a business objectives section details what you are trying to accomplish with the product or service you are bringing to market.
  • Ideal Customers: Provide details about the customer base who would ideally be the group that would purchase your service or product.
  • Target Market: Define your target market — i.e., the consumer demographic(s) at which your service or product is aimed.
  • Unique Offerings: Describe your service or product’s unique offerings, and how you will differentiate your product from its competitors in the market.
  • Channels: List the sales and marketing channels you will use to announce your service or product’s launch to market.

While GTM strategy templates often differ, some also include the following additional sections:

  • Analysis: Sometimes referred to as situational analysis, this section prompts you to analyze your offering’s strengths and competitive advantage(s) in potential marketplaces, analyze your competitors, and perform a SWOT analysis.
  • Marketing Strategy: Define the steps for your service or product’s GTM marketing strategy, including the unique selling position (USP), branding, promotions, marketing channels, and budget.
  • Performance Standards: Specify how you plan to measure the service or product’s success in its launch to market, and define your KPIs.
  • Launch Team: List the members of your service or product’s launch team, and note their roles and assigned tasks.

How to Use the Go-to-Market Strategy Templates

GTM strategy templates are easy-to-fill documents that provide a framework for you to plan your product’s or service’s market launch. While these templates differ, they all help you define your target market and strategically position your product for successful launch.

How to Choose the Right Go-to-Market Strategy Template

Choosing the right GTM strategy template depends on your business and your specific needs. Whereas a simple GTM strategy template would work for most verticals, you might need a more specialized GTM strategy template, such as one designed for B2B, SaaS, or marketing.
